Tip of the Day...

Make Windows Explorer start up looking at your C: drive instead of "My Documents"

If you're like me, it's likely that you want to manipulate some files on C: drive when you open Windows Explorer, yet it always defaults to the "My Documents" folder when you start it up. Like to change that behaviour?

Just create a new shortcut icon with the appropriate settings, and use that icon to launch Windows Explorer. You can still have your old icon too, if you want to retain the option of having it start in the "My Documents" folder as well.

First thing's first -- do you know how to create a shortcut? Well that's easy. Just right-click on any empty spot on your Windows desktop. A menu will appear, with one of the choices being "New". When you select that choice, the flyout menu that appears will have the option "Shortcut". Choose that, and the new shortcut wizard will appear, prompting you for the location of the file. Type in (without the quotes) "explorer.scf" and click [Next] to continue. Now give your shortcut a name. The default will be "explorer" but you can make that "Explorer" or "Explore C" or whatever you want. There are some characters that are not allowed here, like the colon, so "Explore C:" is not a valid option.

After creating your shortcut, you can right-click it again and choose "Properties" to control other options, such as changing the icon displayed or changing paths, etc. When you're done, your shortcut's properties page will probably look something like this:

Oh yes, and just so you know, we do have to take time out to earn a living now and then so if you happen to notice that the "Tip of the Day" doesn't change every day, well...  please just be patient and check back a bit later!
